Family and Intergenerational Learning
The Family and Intergenerational Learning Networks bring together a range of organisations that are: promoting and supporting intergenerational learning, involving adults in children's learning and in enabling adults to address and develop their own learning skills.
The Family and Intergenerational Learning Network holds meetings bi-annually in North and South Wales. Click here to receive regular email information about events and the FIL Newsletter.

Brynhyfryd Primary School Family Learning Class
Supporting children with serious medical problems can prove to be a trying time for most parents, especially when it comes to communication. By using phonics, Brynhyfryd Primary School Family Learning Class teaches parents techniques in how to support their children, giving them the tools to meet their family’s needs.
The majority of the parents attending the class came with a negative attitude towards education, due to bad experiences during their school years. Most of the parents also had little knowledge of Phonics, but, through the support and friendship of their tutors and fellow students, what once seemed daunting soon became an invaluable tool.
‘I was in reluctant to go back into education,’ says group member, Rachel Morgan, ‘ I was diagnosed with dyslexia, but I felt that I couldn’t read or write at all. Family learning has shown me that learning can actually be fun.’
Claire Hillier, another member of the group, remarked that ‘ I feel so glad I can talk to the group about my situation. I feel very supported.’
Support is a theme that runs through all of the class’ activities and coupled with their dedication to learning has seen them receive a Highly Commended award at this year’s Inspire! Adult Learners’ Award Ceremony.
Many of the group have gone on to join a basic skills class to further their own skills, giving them more confidence to take an active part in their own community
‘I would recommend this course to any parent,’ says group member Peter Miller, ‘it will help with your own reading and give you the confidence to help your children to read.’
